In Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (NHP), the Mafic Glades and Barrens Ecological System consists of scattered small grassy patches on rocky slopes with thin, dry, but fertile soil. Many species of grasses, sedges, and wildflowers can be found here, in addition to stunted and widely spaced ash and hickory trees. The only natural community in this ecological system in Harpers Ferry NHP is the Basic Woodland. Any other natural communities in this ecological system are beyond the borders of the park.
